Drowning likely to be ruled accidental

September 09, 2005

The drowning of a toddler in Columbia's Lake Elkhorn last week likely will be ruled accidental, a spokeswoman for Howard County police said yesterday.

A licensed, in-home day care provider called police about 11:45 a.m. Sept. 2, reporting a lost child. Another person called about a child in the lake about the same time.

An off-duty Secret Service agent found the 23-month-old boy, Alex Ferrera of Laurel. The agent and a nurse performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but it was not successful.

Police spokeswoman Sherry Llewellyn said that the day care provider and another adult were supervising six children at a lakeside playground.

Police are not releasing the day care owner's name because she has not been charged with a crime.
