Ruth Taustin, 96, candy store worker

September 06, 2005

Ruth Taustin, known to many as the "Candy Kitchen lady" because she worked behind the counter of several Candy Kitchen stores in Ocean City until her late 80s, died Saturday at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury after an illness, including heart problems and kidney failure. She was 96.

Born in New York City, Ms. Taustin lived in Delaware and Baltimore before settling in Ocean City in the early 1970s. There, she worked for years at several Candy Kitchen locations.

She loved to knit, and stocked local nursing homes with lap blankets and booties for seniors' feet.

She also enjoyed bowling and playing cards, said her daughter, Susan Antigone of Washington. An avid sports fan, she regularly watched tennis and golf on TV, and she knew all the players' names.

Services were held Sunday in Salisbury.

In addition to her daughter, survivors include her son, Jay Taustin of Ocean City, and five grandchildren.
