Death of Howard jail inmate investigated

September 05, 2005|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

A 38-year-old man was found lying unresponsive yesterday in his cell at the Howard County Detention Center, and was pronounced dead en route to a hospital, Howard police said.

The inmate, identified as Joseph Edward McGee, was being held on a theft charge and a warrant from authorities in Worcester County, police said.

Police described it as an "unattended death" that is under investigation. They said they were awaiting the results of an autopsy by the state medical examiner's office.

A family member said last night she had found him ill on a visit to the jail Friday, and had demanded better medical care for him.

"He was so sick, so ill. He looked gray," said Annie McGee, who identified herself as the man's sister when reached last night at the family's home in Baltimore. She said he had been spitting blood.

"He didn't even talk to me," she said, adding that she has been given no explanation by the police.

McGee was found lying in his cell by a detention center guard at 9:30 a.m., police said in a news release. No other information about the death was available last night.
