School days are here, and it's time to show off those new clothes.

Monica McMurray, assistant professor of fashion design at Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., says that the phrase "dress to impress" never takes on more meaning than on the first days back at school.

"The back-to-school outfit ... is an indicator of personality, a statement of 'look at me' or 'let me blend,' " she says.

We've put together two affordable, stylish outfit choices.

Your little princess will be the biggest hit in the hallways in an ice-pink, striped velour, hooded dress by Mini Boden (far right). It's also available in other vibrant colors, such as berry and lavender, dusty pink and baby blue. At $44, it's available at (or call 1-866-206-9508).

Put her best foot forward in side-zip pink suede boots by Lands' End for $34.50 (below).

This outfit is feminine, flattering and funky; now top it off with a must-have Hello Kitty backpack to add lots of spunk (shown under the boots).

For the little guy, Old Navy's graphic tees (left, from $8.50-$9.50) speak loudly and make a fashionable statement.

Zip-off climber pants by Lands' End ($29.50, not shown) can be worn year-round and will take his outfit to the next level. Lands' End offers stain-fighting and shrink-resistant fabrics, easily adjustable waists, elastic waist-bands and much more, making parents and kids happy (call 1-800-356-4444 or see the Web site, / kids ).

For a finishing touch, add brown suede baseball boots by Mini Boden (bottom right, $48).

Hey, what's the word?
