Red Sox update

The Red Sox were 5-1 on their current homestand going into last night's game against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. They won 18 of their past 19 at Fenway, including 14 in a row at one point, and were 43-19 at home, the best record in the majors. The defending World Series champions were trying for their 11th series sweep of the year. The Red Sox had won 23 of 32 games, and 27 of 39. Boston has posted a winning record in eight straight months, beginning in July 2004. But the Red Sox needed a win last night to be .500 in their division. The Orioles lead the season series 4-2 at Fenway this season. David Ortiz hit a walk-off home run off closer B.J. Ryan on June 2. He had five homers in his past five games before last night.
