At a glance

Coach: Ralph Friedgen (fifth season)

Last year: 5-6

Conference: Division I-A Atlantic Coast Conference (Atlantic Division)

Radio: 105.7 FM, 1300 AM

Stadium: Byrd Stadium (51,500)

Offense: Multiple

Defense: 4-3

Top returning players: QB Sam Hollenbach, WR Jo Jo Walker, WR Derrick Fenner, TE Vernon Davis, LB D'Qwell Jackson, LB William Kershaw, LB David Holloway, CB Josh Wilson

Top newcomers: WR Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR Isaiah Williams, DE Jeremy Navarre, C Edwin Williams, CB Isaiah Gardner

Strengths: The entire linebacking corps returns from last season, including Jackson, who led the ACC with 123 tackles. The wide receivers have senior leadership in Fenner and Walker. Punter Adam Podlesh has averaged 43.1 yards in two seasons.

Weaknesses: The offensive line lost its star when senior Stephon Heyer's season ended with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, leaving it filled with inexperience. Although improved from last fall, quarterback Hollenbach hasn't been tested, and his tailbacks have yet to emerge as playmakers. The defensive line is young, and for the first time in four years, the place-kickers are a question mark.

Strongest opponent: Virginia Tech. QB Marcus Vick and RB Mike Imoh give the Hokies the kind of balanced offense Maryland needs if it's going to avenge last year's 55-6 walloping. Senior Darryl Tapp, who had 8.5 sacks last year, anchors a sturdy defensive line.

Key game: Virginia. The homecoming game Oct. 1 is a chance for Maryland to avenge last year's 16-0 loss to the Cavaliers. It could be a major turning point or the start of a downward spiral.
