A Cockeysville man sought by Baltimore County police on a rape charge is in jail in Oregon and is suspected in crimes, including a rape, committed in California this week, authorities there said.

Capt. Dave Compomizzo of the Shasta County, Calif., Sheriff's Department said that the man, in interviews with detectives, also implicated himself in several crimes, including sexual assaults and robberies, between there and the East Coast.

David Corwin Mollett, 35, fled Baltimore County last week, county police said, after police circulated a sketch and description of a suspect in the attack on a Timonium woman on Aug. 21. Police believe he fled to Missouri and was in California before he was arrested Tuesday by state police in Oregon.

Mollett was parked on the side of a rural Oregon highway near the city of Bly just before 5 p.m. Tuesday when he told an Oregon State Police sergeant that the gray Ford Explorer with Maryland tags that he was driving had run out of gas, police said. Mollett at one point tossed what was later determined to be a toy gun from the vehicle, authorities said.

The officer discovered that Mollett was wanted in Baltimore County on first-degree rape charges. Mollett was arrested and was in the Klamath County jail yesterday, police said.

After Mollet's arrest, authorities in Shasta County, at the northern end of the Sacramento Valley, were notified that he matched the description of a man who raped a woman who was hitchhiking there early Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The woman gave police a description of the assailant, his weapon and vehicle and memorized most of the license plate number, said Compomizzo. The department issued a national "be on the lookout" bulletin, which led Oregon authorities to contact them, he said.

Compomizzo also said that Mollett implicated himself in "up to a half dozen" crimes, including sexual assaults, between Maryland and the West Coast, but he would not give exact locations.

Police in Bakersfield, in Southern California, suspect Mollett in a robbery Monday. Police said that a woman who was staying at a hotel had just gotten into her vehicle about 11:30 a.m. when a man with a gun demanded her money and pointed the gun at her three children and threatened to kill them if she did not comply, police said. The woman gave the man her wallet, and he fled, Bakersfield police said.

In that case, the victim also gave police a detailed description of the assailant and his vehicle, including a partial license plate number.

No charges have been filed in Shasta County or in Bakersfield.

Mollett was first identified as a suspect in the Aug. 21 rape in Timonium when an officer investigating an unrelated call recognized that the suspect in his case matched the description of the wanted rapist, Baltimore County police said. A warrant was issued for Mollett's arrest in the rape case. At that time, police said they believed Mollett was in Missouri.

Baltimore County detectives were on their way to Oregon yesterday to continue their investigation into the Timonium rape, said Sgt. Vickie Warehime, a Baltimore County police spokeswoman. It was unclear yesterday whether Mollett would be extradited to Maryland.
