The fair will be held rain or shine and will include music, games, food and crafts.
East Columbia library to feature dance troupe
The east Columbia library, 660 Cradlerock Way, Columbia, will feature Raices de Borinquen, a dance troupe based in Washington, as part of its "A Hispanic Heritage Month Program," at 2 p.m. Sept. 17.
Audiences will be exposed to the richness of Puerto Rican culture through the troupe's native folk dances.
No registration is needed.
Blues battle: Tickets to the Battle of the Blues Jazz Concert, to be held at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 10, can be purchased from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily at Maryland Piano, 9139 Red Branch Road. Sponsored by the Columbia chapter of Club Dejouir Inc., the performance will feature Big Jesse Yawn, a local blues artist, and the Phil Heiliger quintet with soloist Chauncey Harris. Tickets are $25. Registration open: East Columbia Preschool has openings in its Tuesday-Thursday class for 3-year-olds and in its Monday-Wednesday-Friday class for 4-year-olds. At the library: Jazz Club at the east Columbia library meets at 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays. Those ages 11 to 15 can learn to play jazz arrangements and participate in jam sessions with musicians from the Council of Elders. All instruments and levels of ability are welcome. Tuesday bridge: The 50-Plus Senior Center at the east Columbia library, 6600 Cradlerock Way in Owen Brown village, holds a continuing drop-in bridge session for beginners (and advanced beginners) from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and an intermediate bridge group from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays. The cost is $6 a class and includes a snack. Some mentoring is available. Mah-jongg classes are held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays. The cost is $31 for three classes. Sing and shop: September children's programs at the east Columbia library will include "Market Day All Together Now," a program of stories and songs for small groups and families of preschool through early elementary-age children at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Thursdays, this week through Nov. 17. Those who attend in the afternoon can visit the Farmers' Market on the library parking lot. "Spanish Story Time," four weeks of stories, songs and activities in Spanish for children ages 2 (with an adult) through 5, will be offered at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 14 through Oct. 5. 410-313-7700.
Bee season: The east Columbia library, 6600 Cradlerock Way, will present "Bee Season: One Champion's Perspective," with fifth-grader Priyanka Chavan, Howard County Spelling Bee champion and representative to the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
