Bus stops changing because of construction

Utility work on West Green Street will not be completed before the opening of schools tomorrow and will affect the stretch between Old New Windsor Road and Bond Street.

Affected school buses are:

Bus 16A, serving Friendship Valley Elementary School: The stop at West Green Street at Park Avenue will remain. The West Green Street at Kings Lane stop will be at the alley at 215/217 W. Main St. The stop at 94 W. Green St. will be at Old New Windsor Road at West Green Street.

Bus 61A, serving Westminster High School: The stop at West Green Street and Anchor Street will be at the alley at 215/217 W. Main St. The stop at West Green Street and Park Avenue will remain.

Bus 170 PM Kindergarten pick-up, serving Friendship Valley Elementary School: The stop at West Green Street and Kings Lane will be at the alley at 215/217 W. Main St.

New school opens; dedication set for Oct. 16

Parr's Ridge Elementary School in Mount Airy will open its doors to students for the first time tomorrow.

The community is invited to attend the school's dedication at 2 p.m. Oct. 16 at 202 Watersville Road.

Free and reduced meal applications out tomorrow

Families with children enrolled in Carroll County public schools will be required to submit only one application per household to qualify for free or reduced-price meals for 2005--2006.

The public schools offer healthy meals at a reduced rate of 30 cents for breakfast and 40 cents for lunch.

Applications will be sent home with each family's youngest child tomorrow and should be returned by the same child.

Board of Education interviews Wednesday

The Carroll County Board of Education will interview the 15 candidates for the vacant board seat beginning at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Room 007 at 125 N. Court St., Westminster.

Board seeks opinions on school calendar

The Carroll County Board of Education is seeking opinions on the proposed calendar for the 2006-2007 school year.

Comments and suggestions may be submitted to Jimmie Saylor, director of Human Resources, at jlsaylo@k12.carr.org, or 125 N. Court St., Westminster 21157.

The calendar may be found on the schools' Web site at www.carrollk12.org. The deadline for feedback is Sept. 16.

SAT prep courses offered to students

Carroll County high school students who need to take the SAT can prepare for the exam by taking SAT or PSAT preparation courses in advance.

Classes will be offered next month around the county as follows: from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 17 and 24 at Westminster High School, 1225 Washington Road; noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 17 and 24 at Winters Mill High, 560 Gorsuch Road, Westminster; noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 17 and Oct. 1 at South Carroll High, 1300 W. Old Liberty Road, Winfield; and noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 24 and Oct. 1 at Century High, 355 Ronsdale Road, near Eldersburg.

Students must attend both sessions.

Tuition is $175, including materials. Registration is open to all high school students.
