Athletics update

The A's were one of the hottest teams in baseball when the Orioles went to McAfee Coliseum last week and swept them in three games. The A's then lost two of three games at home to the lowly Royals and then the first of three games against Detroit. But they rebounded by pounding the Tigers in the final two games of the series behind a resurgent offense. On Wednesday, they had 15 hits in a 9-2 victory. Yesterday, they had 15 hits and won, 11-1. Before the past two days, the A's had not scored more than five runs in the previous 12 games. They are tied with the New York Yankees for first place in the American League wild-card race and are 2 1/2 games behind the Angels in the American League West. After going 8-23 on the road to start the season, the A's are 15-3 away from home since July 10. The A's pitching staff has allowed four runs or fewer in 19 of the past 23 games.
