JOSEPH B. SCHWEIKER, 84, of Rockford, IL, passed away at 7:30 A.M. on Sunday, August 21, 2005, at Swedish American Hospital. He was born on February 25, 1921, in Philadelphia, PA to Elwood and Helen (Devlin) Schweiker. Joe grew up in North Philadelphia strongly influenced and supported by a loving family and his Catholic faith. He graduated from North Catholic High School where he enjoyed participating in musical events. Joe served in the United States Army from 1942 until 1945, attaining the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He took great pride in being a member of the 101st Airborne and fighting in the "Battle of the Bulge (Bastogne)." Joe was wounded in battle and awarded the Purple Heart. On June 7, 1947, Joseph married Helen (Mc Nally) and was blessed with a 56 year marriage to the love of his life. He began his professional career with Remington Rand, which later became Univac and later Unisys, retiring as a Regional Sales Manager in Milwaukee in 1986, after 39 years of devoted service in Baltimore and Milwaukee. Joseph andb Helen lived in Philadelphia, Baltimore, Brookfield, WI, Richmond, VA, where he volunteered weekly at the veterans hospital, and Rockford, making many close friends wherever they were. They both loved the Jersey and Maryland shore and playing golf. As a father and husband Joseph was devoted to his God, his family, his country, his friends, and his work; and passed along these values and priorities to his children and grandchildren. All who knew him admired his optimism and positive attitude even through severe health problems in the final 3 years. The family wishes to profoundly thank the wonderful caregivers at Cor Mariae Care Center who treated him with dignity, respect and love for the past 3 years. Thanks also to Dr. Phalen, Dr. Atienza and the ER and 10th floor nurses and staff at Swedish American Hospital. He is survived by his daughter, Helene (Mike) Carroll; son, Robert (Melissa) Schweiker; grandchildren: Kathleen (Tim) Mc Dermott, Joseph Carroll, Matthew Schweiker, Claire Schweiker; great granddaughter, Helena Mc Dermott; brother, John Schweiker; and numerous nieces and nephews. Joe was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Helen; sisters, Mary and Geraldine; and infant sons, Joseph and Matthew. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, August 26th, at Cor Mariae Care Center Chapel, with Rev. Louis Tosto officiating. Burial will follow in Scandinavian Cemetery. A visitation will precede the service beginning at 9:00 A.M. at the care center. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cor Mariae Care Center.
