Looking to nail down a place you can count on for a terrific manicure or pedicure? Here's a list of five we'd recommend around the Baltimore area. The prices and services vary, but each has something special to offer.

About Faces Salon & Day Spa, 110 W. Timonium Road, Timonium

A classic mani/pedi will run you $54, but for an additional $21, you can get the spa treatment, which includes a 10-minute massage and a refreshing cool mint mask.

The hit: This is Kelly Ripken's manicure spot. Talk about your home runs.

DK Salon and Co., 6080 Falls Road, Mount Washington

Don't leave here without trying the warm stone pedicure, which, for $75, makes your legs and feet feel like a just-bathed baby's.

The hit: Leave relaxed ... and clean. Customers brag that this salon is tops on hygiene.

Lynn's Day Spa, 10720 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia

Voted "Best Day Spa in Howard County" four years in a row by Columbia magazine, Lynn's manicurists specialize in strengthening nails, for a healthy, natural look. Basic combo: $50.

The hit: Tucked away in a woodsy area off the main road, Lynn's lush scenery offers the ultimate in relaxation.

Nails Today, 7005 Security Blvd., Woodlawn

This shopping-centerbased salon looks like any other cookie-cutter, quick 'n' cheap spot you see in malls everywhere ($28 total), but it boasts Valerie Lowery, one of the most creative and talented nail design artists in the region.

The hit: Lowery, who designs freehand, can even apply your favorite photographs to acrylic nails.

Zena's Spa and Salon, 1014 N. Charles St., Baltimore

Situated in historic Mount Vernon, Zena's is equal parts funky, chic and relaxing. For a treat, take your newly polished nails ($49 for the basic combo) across the street to the Belvedere and go dancing on the 13th Floor.

The Hit: Nail technician Julia McCabe makes scented salt scrubs to use at home. Yours for only $5.

Lucille Maurice Maistros of of Havre de Grace recommends Par Excellence Day Spa in her hometown, "The atmosphere is Victorian elegance and from the moment the smiling receptionist offers you a cup of tea you will know that you will be pampered . ... The massages will leave you so relaxed and stress-free that you won't be able to remember what you were worried about yesterday." 452 Congress Ave. 410-939-0029
