Teen is accused of holding man in basement over debt

Howard County police arrested an 18-year-old Columbia man accused of using a handgun and a hammer to hold a 29-year-old man in the basement of a house in the 9500 block of Wandering Way on Friday, authorities said yesterday.

Police said Ronald D. McConnell of 9200 block of Wilbur Court was demanding money he claimed the man owed him. He was charged with first- and second-degree assault, attempted armed robbery and false imprisonment.

Authorities said the resident managed to escape and call police, who arrested McConnell at the house moments later.

Body of paraplegic man is discovered in creek

A 41-year-old paraplegic man was found dead in a Southeast Baltimore creek yesterday morning, police and fire officials said.

The man was found in 3 to 4 feet of water about 9:30 a.m., Fire Department spokesman Chief Kevin Cartwright said. Officials did not release his name pending formal identification.

Family members, who last saw the man Friday evening, reported him missing about 9 a.m. yesterday, Cartwright said. Police found his electric wheelchair on a wooded path leading from the 900 block of Quantrill Way in Armistead Gardens. His body was located 250 to 300 feet away.

He was the second wheelchair user found apparently drowned in two days in the area. On Friday, 51-year-old Linda Simmont, a quadriplegic, was found dead in Bodkin Creek in Anne Arundel County.
