Salons to benefit cancer center

Patrick's Hair Design, 9194 Red Branch Road, will be host to the ninth annual Cuts Against Cancer from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 11.

Proceeds from the event, which offers haircuts, manicures, seated massage and waxing, will benefit the Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource and Image Center. The center offers information and services to cancer patients to make living with cancer easier.

Haircuts during Cuts Against Cancer will cost $25; $40 with blow dry. Manicures will be $12, and a 15-minute massage will cost $15.

Walk-in appointments only are available on the day of the event. Raffle tickets to win a "Day of Beauty" and other prizes will be available at participating salons for $5 or three for $10.

Other participating salons include George of New York, Looks Salon & Spa, Lutfi's International Salon & Spa, Mason & Friends Hair Studio, Rafet's Hairmasters, Tagi's Hair Design, Lynn's Day Spa, Victoria & Albert, and envy.salon.

Afternoon tea set at Historic Oakland

Town Center Community Association will offer a catered Afternoon Tea at Historic Oakland from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday.

The two-course meal includes scones, savory sandwiches and dessert, as well as teas. The cost is $18.90 a person. Reservations are required at least 48 hours in advance.

`Kindergarten, Here We Come' set at library

The Central Library, 10375 Little Patuxent Parkway, will present two sessions of a program of stories and activities for children ages 4 and 5, "Kindergarten, Here We Come!"

The 30-minute program will be offered at 2 p.m. tomorrow and 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Opera: The SEATS Opera Advisory Committee will hold its second Opera Preview with musical highlights and synopses by Tom Glenn from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Bain Center. Retirement celebration: The community is invited to a retirement celebration in honor of Constance Lewis, past principal of Atholton High School, to be held from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 28 at Hawthorn Center, 6175 Sunny Spring, in Hickory Ridge village.
