Chuck Fales, Atholton's athletic director and head football coach, violated a state regulation by using school equipment during a preseason football camp at Atholton.

Possible penalties include censuring the coach and declaring him ineligible to coach this season. The school could also be declared ineligible to compete in the state football tournament.

Fales said the camp consisted of 22 incoming freshmen. He outfitted them with Atholton helmets and shoulder pads.

"Yeah, they were freshmen and I thought they needed to feel the helmets on their heads," Fales said yesterday.

Both Mike Williams, Howard County's coordinator of athletics, and Ned Sparks, executive director of the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association, said Fales violated a rule if he provided the equipment.
