Nancy W. Bregel, 73, licensed practical nurse

August 19, 2005

Nancy W. Bregel, a licensed practical nurse and animal lover, died of complications from an intestinal disease Sunday at St. Joseph Medical Center. The Glen Meadows Retirement Community resident was 73.

Nancy Weir was born in Sewickley, Pa., and raised there and in Palm Beach, Fla. She earned a bachelor's degree in psychology in 1954 from Goucher College and her nursing degree in 1979 from Collier County Vocational and Technical Center in Naples, Fla.

The former Towson resident had worked as a nanny for several Baltimore families during the 1980s and 1990s.

Mrs. Bregel cared for abandoned cats and dogs in her Towson home of many years.

"Her cats had a higher standard of living than most of my friends," said a son, C. Ross Bregel of Towson, a Federal Hill optometrist. "Life was not always easy for Mom, but she was a woman of intense and abiding faith that guided her life."

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. today at Towson Presbyterian Church, 400 W. Chesapeake Ave.

Also surviving are another son, T. Mark Bregel of Ruxton; a brother, John Petersen of Golden, Colo.; a sister, Mary Shea of Greenwich, Conn.; and five grandchildren. Her marriage to Calvert Bregel, a Baltimore attorney, ended in divorce.
