Pop-punk at Sonar

Pop-punk may not be anything new, but it's just so much fun to listen to. How could anyone resist heading down to Sonar tonight for Acceptance with the Receiving End of Sirens, Cartel, Augustana and Panic at the Disco?

The Seattle-based band members of Acceptance, Jason Vena (vocals), Kaylan Cloyd(guitar), Christian Edwin McAlhaney I (guitar), Ryan Zwiefelhofer (bass) and Nick Radovanovic (drums) are touring to promote their second album, Phantoms, which hit stores last month.

Acceptance plays tonight at Sonar Lounge, 407 E. Saratoga St. Doors open at 7 p.m. Admission is $12. Call 410-327- 8333 or visit www.sonar

Gogol Bordello at Black Cat

Gogol Bordello's music is gypsy-cabernet-punk, which is a way of saying that the only way to get it is to hear it tonight at the Black Cat Club in Washington.

The band is an immigrant amalgam of Israelis Oren Kaplan (saxophonist) and Ori Kaplan (guitarist), Ukrainian Eugene HM-|tz (acoustic guitar, percussion, vocals), Rea Mochiach (bass, percussion, background vocals, electronics), and Russian Yuri Lemeshev (accordion). They have been making records and touring since the early '90's and are promoting a new album, Gypsy Punks: Underdog World Strike.

Gogol Bordello may be best known for its bizarre and incredible stage shows, which make use of elaborate costumes to tell strangely enticing stories, such as one about super-powered immigrant Ukrainian vampires. Throw Rag, a psychobilly/garage punk band, will open.

Gogol Bordello is playing at 8:30 tonight with Throw Rag at the Black Cat Club, 1811 14th St. N.W., Washington. Tickets are $13. Call 202-667-7960 or visit for more information.
