Ravens camp update

August 17, 2005|By Mike Preston

Jamal Lewis file: The star running back took a lot of repetitions with the first team. It was by far his busiest day of training camp. He still hesitates putting full pressure on his ankle at times, but that may be more of a confidence matter than anything else.

Sticky fingers: The receiving corps was quite impressive. Clarence Moore had a great day and Patrick Johnson continues to be one of the most impressive receivers in training camp. Now, they need to take that level of concentration from the practice field to the games.

Down and out: Right guard Brian Rimpf had his breakfast in the afternoon. On a trap play off tackle, Rimpf pancaked linebacker Mike Smith, who stepped across the line of scrimmage before looking both ways. Smith got the number of the train. It was Rimpf's 69.

Big arm: There are days when quarterback Kyle Boller makes big-time throws. He threw a 24-yard touchdown pass over the middle to Moore. The pass was tight and sailed inches over the head of safety Will Demps, who had Moore blanketed. Anything but a well-delivered pass would have been easily batted down or intercepted.

Payback: There aren't too many safeties who can bait a quarterback the way Ed Reed can. As tight end Terry Jones drifted over the middle on a pass, Reed started drifting away from him, which led Boller to throw the ball. As soon as the ball left Boller's hands, Reed broke on it. He should have intercepted the pass and returned it for a touchdown, but dropped it before he could tuck the ball away.

Double threat: Former Ravens Pro Bowl outside linebacker Peter Boulware is expected to work out for team officials today. If he does well and the Ravens re-sign him, it would complete plans they had for the 2004 season, before Boulware was ruled out because of injury. The Ravens have long envisioned having Boulware bringing the heat from one side and Terrell Suggs from the other.

Today's practice: Special teams begin at 1:30 p.m. Regular practice is from 2 to 4 p.m.

Injuries: Tight end Todd Heap (ankle and shoulder), running back Musa Smith (leg), end/outside linebacker Dan Cody (knee) and cornerback Dale Carter (leg) did not practice.

Countdown to season opener: 26 days.
