Athletics update

No team is catching Oakland at the right time. The Athletics jumped back in the playoff race by winning 23 games since the break, the most in the majors, and are 50-18 since May 30. They fell behind the Los Angeles Angels for first place in the AL West yesterday but lead the wild-card race. Jay Payton has eight homers since joining Oakland on July 13, including a three-run shot Saturday that powered a 5-2 win over Minnesota. The Athletics erased a deficit for the 36th time, so taking an early lead doesn't necessarily mean anything. They are 38-21 at home after yesterday's 2-1 loss. The Orioles went 0-7 against Oakland last year, the sixth straight year they've lost a season series to the A's. They batted .199 and averaged two runs per game. The Orioles lost two of three in the first series of 2005, winning on Opening Day before dropping two straight.
