Open houses set at Cedar Lane, Marriotts Ridge

Cedar Lane School and Marriotts Ridge High School will hold open houses Aug. 28.

The new Cedar Lane School, on the Lime Kiln Middle School campus in Fulton, will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and celebrate the opening of the new facility for severely disabled students.

Howard County's newest high school, Marriotts Ridge, at 12100 Woodford Drive in Marriottsville, will hold its ceremony and open house from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The school will open this year for students in ninth and 10th grades, adding grades 11 and 12 in the next two years.

New-teacher session to be held tomorrow

About 500 new Howard County teachers will report to work one week earlier than their colleagues tomorrow to attend the school system's new-teacher orientation at Wilde Lake High School in Columbia.

The orientation is to begin with breakfast at 8 a.m., followed by a talk by keynote speaker Neal Petersen, author of Journey of a Hope Merchant.

The teachers are to be served lunch by top school officials, including Superintendent Sydney L. Cousin. The afternoon will be devoted to sessions on curriculum.

Over a four-day period, the new teachers will have a chance to attend sessions on the school system's internal e-mail system, health benefits, special-education inclusion, multiculturalism, grading and classroom management.

Friday is set aside to give the teachers time to work at their assigned schools.

SAT prep courses set at Mount Hebron High

The Mount Hebron Viking Backers is sponsoring a series of 20-hour SAT prep courses before and during the school year.

The courses, which are being taught by Marian McCain, a mathematics teacher at Centennial High School for 20 years, will consist of study in math and critical reading.

The next session will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 31.

HCC plans orientation for new students

Howard Community College will offer new-student orientation sessions from 6 p.m. to 9:10 p.m. Aug. 23 and 9 a.m. to 12:10 p.m. Aug. 26 in the college's Smith Theatre, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, in Columbia.

First-time students at the college are expected to attend. Parents are welcome.

The sessions include refreshments, information packets, interactive workshops, campus tours and prizes.

Laurel College Center information day set

The Laurel College Center, a partnership of Howard Community College and Prince George's Community College, will hold a drop-in information session from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the center, 312 Marshall Ave., Laurel.

The public is invited to tour the center, talk with academic and financial aid advisers, and learn how to enroll for credit and noncredit classes.

Classes are to begin Aug. 29; registration for noncredit courses is continuing.

School board plans to meet Aug. 25

The Howard County Board of Education will hold regularly scheduled meetings at 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Aug. 25 in the boardroom at the Department of Education, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City.

The afternoon and evening sessions will begin with a public forum during which members of the public can address the board on any topic for which there is no formal hearing process. Advanced sign up is preferred.
