Places in city that say `Pets welcome'

Baltimore is becoming more dog-friendly

It's lunchtime, and you're starving. You want to grab a bite and then maybe swing by the video store or shop in Fells Point, but you haven't walked your dog, Boopi. You tiptoe toward the back door, hoping he won't hear you, but it's too late - he's already sitting there with the leash in his mouth and that look in his eyes that melts you into a puddle.

Boopi loves you so much - how dare you walk out and leave him here, alone, in your home all day? Take him with you to this list of dog-friendly places around the city. But don't step out with the pooch in tow, drop by your local cafe and string him to a pole while you go inside.

"Bad idea," said Janet Boss, a dog trainer with Best Friends Dog Obedience on Falls Road. "Even if you have a really well-trained dog lying down outside at the signpost, you can't count on what somebody might feed your dog, or anything else."

Boss said it's better to leave Boopi at home if you can't accommodate him where you're going. And, of course, Boopi needs to be well-behaved and on a leash.

Here's a list of some local cafes, bars and stores where you can safely take your dog. City parks aren't on it because most parks welcome dogs (as long as you clean up after them). Health codes keep Boopi and other dogs from legally setting paw in enclosed restaurants and bars where food is being served, so they're not on the list either. While Baltimore doesn't exactly win the Most Dog-Friendly award, the city isn't as bad as it used to be, Boss said.

"Some cities are a lot more pet-friendly than others," Boss said. "Baltimore's getting there, but I don't think we're quite there yet."
