Riversdale event

On Saturday, go back to 1812 and witness a re-enactment of the prebattle of Bladensburg at Riversdale House Museum in Riverdale Park. Along with traditional cannon firing and gunnery drills, visitors can participate in children's games and see kitchen displays of the era.

Anthony Pitch, author of The Burning of Washington, will discuss the war. Actors in period costume will play civilians and the mistress of Riversdale. Music and dancing will be by John DuRant. Period refreshments will be available, including cannonball ice cream from the University of Maryland Dairy.

The Riversdale House Museum is at 4811 Riverdale Road, Riverdale Park. From noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, the grounds will be open. The event is free; house tours are free for children younger than 5, $1 for students, $2 for senior citizens and $3 for other adults. Call 301-864-0420.

Testing tables and a station to appraise antique pens will be available. Those who attend can also get help repairing their pens, get handwriting tips and join clubs, including the Calligraphy Guild. There will also be freebies, including pads, ink and editions of Pen World International magazine.

The Pen SuperShow runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday at the Sheraton Premiere Hotel, 8661 Leesburg Pike, Vienna, Va. Admission is $6; free for children younger than 12. Call 703-448-1234.
