Camp update

Ravens

August 10, 2005|By BRENT JONES

Depleted corps: Jamaine Winborne and Zach Norton rotated at left cornerback for Chris McAlister, who had the day off. With Dale Carter and Deion Sanders also out, the young players proved, at least for a day, that they can run with the big boys. Norton had a solid tackle on Chester Taylor and looked sharp knowing his responsibilities. Winborne knocked down a pass intended for Devard Darling.

Good and bad: Kyle Boller threw about as perfect a pass as possible on a 22-yard corner route for a touchdown to Derrick Mason over the outstretched hand of Will Demps. It was a ball placed nicely over cornerback Samari Rolle, who dropped into coverage and away from Demps. Then on the next play, Boller looked off a receiver to the same side only not to know where to go with the ball next. It was the type of play that would have gotten Boller knocked into the middle of next week had it been a game.

Goal-line struggles: For as good as the Ravens' first-team defense has looked all camp, the unit got spanked twice on the goal line by the offense. First, Taylor powered through the teeth of the defense for a 2-yard score. A play later, Boller, off a play-action fake to Taylor, hit fullback Justin Green for a score.

Breakaway ability: You may not have heard of Alex Haynes, but the running back out of Central Florida may become a somebody soon. Haynes broke a 30-yard touchdown run and looks to have some wheels. The friendly track in Atlanta should give Haynes a bigger boost when he plays in the fourth quarter against the Falcons.

Rolle cruising: Quietly, Rolle is having an outstanding camp. The veteran cornerback looks comfortable within the defense. He hasn't made the spectacular interceptions like Sanders, McAlister and Ed Reed, but he doesn't have to. The blanket coverage is enough. Rolle broke up a pass intended for Clarence Moore, dropping his shoulder into the receiver to throw him off balance.

Today's practice: Only one practice. Special teams start at 1:30 p.m. Full-squad practice begins at 2 p.m. and should end around 4 p.m.

Injuries: Todd Heap (ankle and shoulder), Musa Smith (leg), Dan Cody (knee), Alan Ricard (hamstring), Sanders (rest), McAlister (rest) and Carter (leg) did not practice.

Countdown to season opener: 32 days.
