Aug. 14 festival to celebrate civic heroes

The Celebrate Local Heroes Festival will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 14 at Dutterer Family Park at Winters Alley and Monroe Street, Westminster.

Local law enforcement, Fire Department and public works employees will offer displays, demonstrations and information on what they do to protect the public.

Civic organizations also will participate with displays and information. Games will be offered and food will be sold.

Bear Branch offers hike for young children

Bear Branch Nature Center offers activities for all ages and interests.

A Tiny Tykes Hike will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday for children ages 3 to 6 with an adult. The cost is $1 for members and $2 for nonmembers.

Archery for Beginners will be held at 6 p.m. Aug. 17 for ages 8 to adult. Those who take this workshop can participate in the Archery Competition at 6 p.m. Aug. 19. The cost is $3 for members and $5 for nonmembers for each program.

Children ages 8 to 12 can participate in Freshwater Fun from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 19. A naturalist will help explore the springs, streams and wetlands of the park and the animals that live there. Old shoes and long pants that can get wet and dirty are recommended. The cost is $8 for members and $12 for nonmembers.

A Furry Friends Puppet Show will be held at 1 p.m. Aug. 21 for all ages. A craft and snack are included in the program. The cost is $1 for members and $2 for nonmembers.

A Morning Bird Walk will be taken from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Aug. 24. Ages 10 to adult are welcome to take binoculars and a field guide to search for different species of birds. The cost is $1 for members and $2 for nonmembers.

Registration is required for programs.

The nature center is at 300 John Owings Road, north of Westminster.

Book club, animal talk offered at library

Westminster branch library, 50 E. Main St., will offer:

"Teen Online Book Club" this month to read and discuss Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling at

"Australian Animal Adventure: A Visit from the National Aquarium in Baltimore" at 2 p.m. Wednesday for ages 5 and older. The program will highlight the aquarium's new exhibit, Animal Planet's Wild Extremes, and how Australia's animals live under extreme conditions. Registration is required.

"Pizza Hut Library Fund Raiser" from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday for all ages. Family night will help raise funds for the library. Carroll County Pizza Huts will donate 20 percent of their sales to the library. Coupons are available at library branches.

"Let's Talk Classics" for teens and adults at 7 p.m. Thursday to discuss The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle.

Historical center open for tours today

The Manchester Historical Center in the basement of the Municipal Building will be open from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. today.

Special tours may be arranged by calling Julia Berwager at 410- 239-7673.

The museum has a clothing, school, special collections, bicentennial, and photos and artifacts room. The school room features class pictures from Manchester High School and primary schools.

The Municipal Building is at 3208 York St.

Immanuel Church to honor its 245th anniversary

Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church will celebrate its 245th anniversary with activities Saturday and Aug. 14.

An archives, with items from the church's early days, will be displayed in the Sunday school auditorium both days.

Services will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Aug. 14, featuring a presentation, "The Church of Christ in Every Age." Members of the congregation will tell the history of the church from 1760 to today.

Library to hold book talks, activities for kids, adults

North Carroll branch library, 2255 Hanover Pike, Greenmount, will offer:

"Teen Online Book Club" this month to read and discuss Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling at

"Slithering Snakes" for all ages at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow. A naturalist from Piney Run Nature Center will take some snakes to show and discuss why they are good to have around. Registration is required.

The North Carroll Book Discussion Group for ages 9 to 12 at 6:45 p.m. tomorrow to discuss Everything on a Waffle by Polly Horvath.

"Hampstead Pizza Hut Library Fund Raiser" from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday. The restaurant will donate 20 percent of its sales to the library. Coupons are available at all library branches.

"Homeschoolers Hour - Reader's Theater" for ages 7 to 10 at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

"Meet Mark Siegel" for ages 10 to 14 at 2:30 p.m. Thursday. The graphic artist and illustrator will discuss the evolution of the graphic novel and demonstrate how he creates his characters and stories.
