August 05, 2005

Dan Scott Taylor Jr., 65, who built a submarine that searched the bottom of Scotland's Loch Ness for its purported monster, died July 23 from surgical complications in Savannah, Ga.

Mr. Taylor made his first voyage to search for evidence of "Nessie" in 1969 in his homemade submarine, the Viperfish, but came up empty despite some 50 dives in six months.

He was near completion of a new, bigger sub to try diving expeditions again.
