The Orioles announced today that the scheduled pre-game ceremonies on Aug. 14 to honor Rafael Palmeiro's 3,000th hit will not be held at the request of Palmeiro.

"Through his agent, Rafael has specifically requested that the planned event not be held," said Joe Foss, Orioles vice chairman and chief operating officer. "Given the circumstances, the club is in agreement with Rafael's wish to not move forward with the ceremonies."

Palmeiro is serving a 10-day suspension for testing positive for steroids. The Orioles' first baseman is also being investigated for perjury after he denied using steroids in his testimony before a House committee.

Palmeiro can return to the Orioles' lineup on Aug. 11.
