School-supplies drive for needy seeks donations

Prepare for Success is collecting backpacks and school supplies for Howard County children in need.

Drop-off boxes are available at Howard county government office buildings, libraries, Columbia village centers, Columbia Association sites and at other locations. Cash donations are also welcome, and should be mailed to Prepare for Success, 6800 Oakland Mills Road, Columbia 21045.

The campaign ends Aug. 9.

Volunteers are needed from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 10, 11 and 12 to help organize and stuff backpacks for delivery to schools.

Transit program for seniors needs volunteer coordinator

Neighbor Ride, a program that matches volunteer drivers with seniors who need transportation to medical and other appointments, is seeking volunteers.

The nonprofit group, which provides transportation to seniors seven days a week, has been approved for a 2005-2006 partnership with Volunteer Maryland, a program of the governor's office that develops volunteer service and learning programs to meet critical needs in the state, and is approved to receive the services of a Volunteer Maryland coordinator.

The position requires an 11-month, part-time commitment as a member of AmeriCorps. Extensive training, a $6,500 living allowance and a $2,362.50 post-service education award are offered.

Applications must be received by Aug. 22. The service year begins Sept. 21.
