86 Thunder Hill swimmers do 8,010 laps to aid school-supplies drive

Eighty-six swimmers recently participated in a swim-a-thon to raise money for Prepare for Success, a Howard County program that provides backpacks and school supplies to children in need.

The team, the Thunder Hill Lightning, swam 8,010 laps in the 25-meter Thunder Hill Pool and accumulated pledges of $2,000.

La Leche League AM to meet at new location

La Leche League of Columbia AM will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday at a new location: Christ Episcopal Church, 6800 Oakland Mills Road.

The topic will be "Ready, Steady, Breastfeed."

Pregnant mothers and infants and toddlers are welcome. The group offers information, guidance and support to breastfeeding mothers.

East Columbia Preschool has openings in 2 classes

East Columbia Preschool has openings in its Tuesday-Thursday class for 3-year-olds and in its Monday-Wednesday-Friday class for 4-year-olds.

The cooperative preschool, which enrolls about 60 children, meets at Owen Brown Community Center, 6800 Cradlerock Way.

Tuesday bridge: The 50-Plus Senior Center at the east Columbia library, 6600 Cradlerock Way in Owen Brown village, holds a continuing drop-in bridge session for beginners (and advanced beginners) from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and an intermediate bridge group from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays. Night out: The Oakland Mills community policing office will celebrate National Night Out, a crime-prevention program, at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the satellite police office, 5820 Stevens Forest Road, Oakland Mills. Library's night out: The east Columbia library will celebrate National Night Out and police-community partnerships with a Volksmarch, entertainment, story times, balloons, refreshments, contests, prizes and safety demonstrations.
