July 28, 2005

Mary Dorothy Barchanowicz, a retired marketing executive who raised funds for people with breast cancer, died of the disease Tuesday at her Severna Park home. She was 57.

Mary Dorothy Ryan was born in Pittsburgh and grew up in Monroeville, Pa. She attended Wheeling College and the Community College of Allegheny County.

She began her career in underwriting in Pittsburgh and moved into marketing during the 1980s when she began working for Aetna Insurance Co., CNA Insurance Co. and Fidelity & Deposit Co. of Maryland.

For the past five years, until retiring because of failing health earlier this year, Mrs. Barchanowicz had been senior marketing representative for Companion Insurance Co. of South Carolina's Maryland division.

She was married in 1969 to Daniel E. Barchanowicz, a Defense Department program director, who survives her.

Mrs. Barchanowicz was found to have breast cancer four years ago. She raised funds for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

Despite her illness, she was able to attend her daughter Sarah A. Barchanowicz's graduation in May from the Maryland Institute College of Art and her June wedding to Josh Mandell.

"She was radiant and full of joy, and walked down the aisle," said her husband, with whom she later danced at the reception.

She was a communicant of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 689 Ritchie Highway, Severna Park, where a Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. tomorrow.

Surviving in addition to her husband and daughter, also of Severna Park, is a brother, J. Dunae Ryan of Monroeville; and many nieces and nephews.
