Work has begun on North Laurel water system

Improvements to the North Laurel-area water distribution system are under way at the southwest corner of the intersection of Gorman and Stephens roads, across from Stone Lake Drive.

The improvements are deemed necessary to provide sufficient public water to meet projected needs for commercial use and fire protection in the southeast portion of the county.

The project requires single-lane closings on Gorman and Stephens roads between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays.

The project is scheduled to be completed in late October.

'60s tribute concert to be held Friday

The 27th Anniversary Montpelier Summer Concert Series continues at 7:30 p.m. Friday with a performance of 1960s tribute music by the Back Pages Band on the grounds of Montpelier Mansion, at Route 197 at Muirkirk Road, Laurel.

Take a picnic and blanket or chair to the free two-hour concert on the west lawn.

Free public parking and parking for the disabled is available at the Montpelier Drive Muirkirk Road entrances, off Route 197, a quarter-mile west of Baltimore-Washington Parkway.

The Montpelier Summer Concert Series is a gift to citizens from the south Laurel Recreation Council volunteers, who are celebrating 35 years of service to the community.

Talk Tuesday to focus on Medicare drug plan

Howard County Department of Citizen Services' Office on Aging will present a talk on Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Savage Senior Center, 9525 Durness Lane.

Enrollment will begin in November, and coverage will begin in January.

Representatives from the Senior Health Insurance Assistance Program will lead the discussion. To register: 410-313-7391.

Navy Ensign Kitan Bae, son of Joung S. Bae and Kevin G. Sik Bae of North Laurel, recently graduated from the Naval Academy in Annapolis and was commissioned in the Navy. He received a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in systems engineering.

The Savage branch library holds an English conversation club for adults and teens for whom English is a second or third language so that they can practice speaking and understanding in a group setting. Fishing is open to the public at Cash Lake at Patuxent Research Refuge and will continue through mid-October. Anglers can also fish at the refuge's North Tract entrance.
