Oakland Mills to mark National Night Out

The Oakland Mills community policing office will celebrate National Night Out, a national crime prevention program, at 6 p.m. Aug. 2 at the satellite police office, 5820 Stevens Forest Road, in Oakland Mills.

After a kick-off at the satellite police office, which will provide food and entertainment (including McGruff, the police mascot), residents are encouraged to organize outdoor gatherings with friends and neighbors.

Streets or blocks planning a celebration are asked to call Officer Mike Johnson at 410-313- 5805. He will make sure that the police visit the party to celebrate community spirit and cooperation.

The east Columbia library will celebrate National Night Out and police-community partnerships with a Volksmarch, entertainment, story times, balloons, refreshments, contests, prizes and safety demonstrations.

The celebration is planned from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 2 at the library, 6600 Cradlerock Way.

Restaurant presenting an opera night Tuesday

Aida Bistro, 7185A Gateway Drive, will present its first opera night - a performance for diners - from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Soprano Jennifer Jellings will perform with tenor Michael Blaney. They will be accompanied by pianist Sophia Yoo.

"If everything goes well, we expect we'll do this on a regular basis, [on] either the first or second Tuesday of the month," said the restaurant's owner, Joe Barbera. "We've been doing live jazz here every Wednesday for the past 2 1/2 years." The opera nights will supplement that program, he said.

Tuesday bridge: The 50-Plus Senior Center at the east Columbia library, 6600 Cradlerock Way in Owen Brown village, holds a continuing drop-in bridge session for beginners (and advanced beginners) from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and and intermediate bridge group from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays. The cost is $6 a class and includes a snack. Mah jongg classes are held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays. The cost is $31 for three classes. Music outdoors: A free Tuesday night concert series at Lake Elkhorn continues this week with a performance by Milkshake at 7 p.m. The series will conclude with a performance by Walt Michael & Company at 7 p.m. July 26. The concerts are held in the band shell at the Lake Elkhorn spillway. In case of inclement weather, the concerts will be held in the pavilion at the lake. 410-730-4610.

La Leche to meet: La Leche League of Columbia PM will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Grace Community Church, 9180 Rumsey Road, off Red Branch Road. The topic will be "Dealing with Criticism." Lively body: Long Reach Community Association, 8775 Cloudleap Court, will offer a four-week, introductory weight-loss program, "Body for Life," from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays, July 25 through Aug. 15. The cost is $55 for four weeks; a 5 percent discount will be applied for residents of Columbia Association-assessed property. Belly-dancing classes for adults will be offered from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays, July 25 through Sept. 19.
