Mariners update

Though Seattle (39-48) is still in last place in the American League West, the Mariners are coming off a four-game sweep of the first-place Angels in Anaheim. During Seattle's first four-game winning streak of the season, the Mariners outscored the Angels 33-13, scoring 21 of those runs with two outs. However, the Mariners are still last in the AL in home runs and second to last in runs. When former Orioles manager Mike Hargrove brought his new team to Camden Yards in late May, the Mariners were swept, scoring just five runs in three games. Adrian Beltre, a free-agent acquisition who was supposed to give Seattle's Ichiro Suzuki-led offense a big lift, has a .261 average, nine home runs and 44 RBIs. Last year, he hit .334 with 48 homers and 121 RBIs for the Dodgers. Rafael Palmeiro enters the series just two hits shy of 3,000. Lifetime, he is 22-for-70 (.314) against Sele; 6-for-20 (.300) against Pineiro; 21-for-82 (.256) against Moyer; and 5-for-16 (.313) against Meche.
