Evan Hunter, 78, a prolific writer whose gritty Ed McBain 87th Precinct detective series pioneered the police procedural genre, died of cancer Wednesday in Weston, Conn.

Mr. Hunter also drew on his experience as a teacher to pen 1954's The Blackboard Jungle, a story of big-city school violence that became a 1955 film.
