July 28 seminar to focus on pond management

The Maryland Cooperative Extension will co-sponsor a "Pond Management for Nurseries and Greenhouses" seminar from 1 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. July 28 at Country View Nursery in Clarksville, western Howard County.

John Rich, Country View general manager, will describe how the pond is used to irrigate the nursery. J.G. Warfield of Soil Conservation will tell how to start a new irrigation pond for a nursery or greenhouse.

Other topics will include high rate filters; picking a pump; planting and controlling floating and submerged plants; controlling algae; and operation and maintenance of an irrigation system.

Participants will build a boat with cardboard and duct tape and have a boat race on the pond.

Registration is $25 and includes dinner. Deadline is July 22.
