THE QUESTION

Did any Civil War battles take place in Howard County?

THE ANSWER

Yes. Confederate soldiers on their way to Gettysburg engaged in a skirmish with Union troops at the Battle of Cooksville in western Howard County on June 19, 1863. According to the Maryland Office of Tourism, which has erected a sign at Routes 97 and 144, the Union Army saved vitally important artillery from the Confederate cavalry.
