Health Department offers free materials on quitting smoking

The county Health Department is offering materials to help smokers kick the habit.

"Xtreme Quitting," is aimed at young men who wish to stop smoking. The booklet sets the program as an extreme sports adventure, using three plans: The Sky Dive, The Cliff Hanger and The Flip. The program can be obtained by calling 410-222- 7979, or online at www.aa health.org/contactfree.asp.

Stop smoking materials for Korean-speaking residents can be obtained by calling Jung Ja Beckwith, the department's Korean coordinator of special programs, at 410-222-4415.

Red Cross blood drive planned July 18 in Odenton

The Red Cross will hold a blood donation drive from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. July 18 at Rita's Italian Ice, 1111 Odenton Road, Odenton. Donors will receive a free Italian ice.

Donors must be in good health, at least 17 years old, or 16 with parental consent, weigh at least 110 pounds, have not gotten a tattoo within the past 12 months, and have not donated blood in the past 56 days.

Appointments for donating can be made at the store before July 18, or by calling 410-672- 0900.

Water quality results on Web, by phone

Water-sampling results from 101 county beaches are available online and by phone through Labor Day. See www.aahealth. org, or call 410-222-7999.

The Web site and phone line also announce emergency closings of beaches and waterways.

During such times, the areas are closed to recreational uses such as swimming and other water sports.

Hospital has urgent need for blood donations

Anne Arundel Medical Center is urgently seeking blood donations. Although some hospitals purchase blood or use donations from the Red Cross, AAMC depends solely on donations made at the hospital.

The hospital's blood bank is open for donations from 8:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Monday; 8:15 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday; 7:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Thursday; and 7:15 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Friday.

Any healthy adult between the ages of 17 and 70 who weighs at least 110 pounds is eligible to donate.
