EDWARD P. MATTHEWS, JR., 85, of Frederick, Maryland, died Sunday, July 3, 2005, at Northhampton Manor Nursing Home. He was the husband of Emma Matthews. They were married for 66 years. Born March 28, 1920 in Norfolk, Virginia. He was the son of the late Edward P. Matthews and Anita Staylor. Mr. Matthews was a Lieutenant Colonel in US Air Force and retired in 1970 after 28 years of service. He received his B.S. from the University of Maryland in 1950. While attending he was on the track team from 1945-1950. He received his masters degree from the University of Denver in 1959. He was a cross country coach for the Air Force Academy from 1957 to 1962. He also was an accounting instructor at the University of Maryland and the University of Salisbury. Mr. Matthews was a Sr. Olympic track record holder from 1990 to 1996. In addition to his wife Emma, he is survived by three children, Edward Matthews of Annapolis, Roxanne Moore and husband Timothy of Germantown, and Mark Matthews and wife Mary of Columbia, four granddaughters, Colleen and Laura Moore, Amanda and Rebecca Matthews. He is preceded in death by a son, Timothy J. Matthews. The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike on Thursday, July 7, 2005 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, July 8, 2005 at St. John's Catholic Church, 116 East 2nd Street, Frederick at 11 A.M. with Father Wayne Funk officiating. Interment will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Silver Spring, MD.
