Yankees update

Injuries and ineffectiveness continue to ravage New York's pitching staff. Supposed to start yesterday's series finale at Detroit, one-time Orioles target Carl Pavano was scratched because of a sore shoulder. Chien-Ming Wang moved up a day, shutting out the Tigers through seven innings in New York's 1-0 victory. That leaves Sturtze, usually a key member of the Yankees' bullpen, to take the mound today. With Kevin Brown and Jaret Wright on the disabled list, Johnson will start on three days' rest tomorrow. In two of his past three starts, Johnson has given up seven earned runs. Third baseman Alex Rodriguez is tied for second in the American League in home runs (20) and third in RBIs (66), but he is in the midst of a 1-for-24 slump over his past six games, including 0-for-4 with two strikeouts yesterday.
