Teaching techniques for rekindling memories

Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will sponsor a Memories & Journaling workshop program, for seniors ages 55 and older, from 10 a.m. to noon July 12 at Pfeiffer Corner School House in Ellicott City.

Participants will learn techniques for rekindling memories and recording them for family and friends.

The cost is $15, which includes materials.

A glass-etching class for seniors will be offered from 10 a.m. to noon July 15 at Ellicott City Senior Center.

Participants will learn how to turn inexpensive glassware into one-of-a-kind creations, using brush, stencils and etching creme. After making a practice piece, the students will have a chance to produce a final project.

The cost is $18. Registration is required.

Teens invited to join library's magazine staff

Teens are invited to join the staff of the Howard County Library's new teen magazine. Staff members will write and collect articles, edit, proofread and do design work for the quarterly print and online magazine.

Planning will begin during the summer and continue through the school year. Anyone interested should attend a meeting from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. July 20 at the Miller branch library, 9421 Frederick Road, Ellicott City.

Registration is required.

The Miller branch will offer a Chick-Lit Book Club, to explore great beach reads for girls, ages 12 and older.

The group will choose titles at its first meeting, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. July 12. Registration is required.

Mount Hebron students to explore food careers

A new partnership with Salazar Catering Services will allow Mount Hebron High School students to explore careers in food service and incorporate concepts of entrepreneurship in their academic studies.

Salazar operates a small cafe in the Howard County Department of Education building.

Pipe organ demonstration planned for 40 students

The Baltimore chapter of the American Guild of Organists, in cooperation with the Free State Theatre Organ Society, will sponsor "Pipe Organ Encounters" for 40 middle- and high-school students Tuesday at the Spring Grove Hospital Center in Catonsville.

Michael Britt, organist at the Church of the Little Flower in Baltimore, will demonstrate the sounds of the theater pipe organ and accompany a Laurel and Hardy silent film.

The event is part of an effort to preserve theater and classic organ music.

Book covers available:

Third-grade artists at Rockburn Elementary School in Elkridge have provided illustrations for new Howard County farm book covers. Each cover in the three-set collection shows local landscapes and farms as painted by the young artists. The covers are printed on glossy paper and are available free to Howard County elementary school-age children at the authority's offices in Suite 500, 6751 Columbia Gateway Drive, Columbia, or at the Howard County Fair, in the Main Exhibition Hall at the fairgrounds. 410-313-6500, or www.hceda.org.

Conversation club:

The Miller branch library offers an English Conversation Club from 7:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Mondays. The club is intended for adults and teenagers who speak English as a second or third language and who want to practice in a group setting. Registration is requested. 410-313-1950.

Gardening advice:

The Miller branch library is offering drop-in question-and-answer sessions with master gardeners from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Mondays and 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays to Sept. 30. Those interested are invited to discuss gardening concerns or take plant samples. 410-313-1950.
