Civil War encampment scheduled

Union Mills Homestead will hold a Civil War encampment starting at 10 a.m. Saturday and July 10 on the grounds at 3311 Littlestown Pike.

Activities will include drills and demonstrations, and guided tours of the historic Shriver Homestead and Grist Mill for a small fee. A blacksmith will demonstrate his skills.

A clown, wagon rides and music by the Little German Band will be featured July 10.

Zion United Methodist to hold annual picnic

Zion United Methodist Church will hold its 123rd annual Sunday school picnic from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at the church and grounds, 2716 Old Washington Road, Shipley.

There will be a flea market and craft sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Fried chicken platters will be served starting at 11 a.m.

The Gospel Travelers and the Salem Bottom Boys will provide music from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Westminster library slates puppet show, book author

Westminster branch library, 50 E. Main St., will offer:

"The Three Little Pigs Puppet Show" at 1 p.m. Tuesday, 7 p.m. Wednesday and 1 p.m. Friday for all ages (children 3 and younger with an adult). Registration is required.

"Meet Carolyn Reeder" at 7 p.m. Thursday for ages 7 to 17. The author of Shades of Gray, Foster's War and Before the Creeks Ran Red will discuss writing.

Manchester firefighters plan carnival

Manchester Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual carnival tomorrow through Saturday at the carnival grounds on York Street.

Dinner platters will be served starting at 4:30 p.m. daily in the social hall. Food stands open by 6 p.m. and rides and games open at 7 p.m.

A firemen's parade will start at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Discounted ride nights will be Tuesday and Thursday.

Concerts will be given by Mike Yost and Miller Station tomorrow, David Davis and the Warrior River Boys on Tuesday, the Shades on Wednesday, Iron Ridge on Thursday, Bob Plunkert and Real Country on Friday and Tori Anderson and Possum Holler on Saturday.

Church to welcome St. Andrew's Society

Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manchester will welcome members of the St. Andrew's Society at the 10:30 a.m. worship service today.

Youth fishing derby scheduled Saturday

Manchester Parks Foundation will hold its annual youth fishing derby Saturday at Charlotte's Quest Nature Center, 3400 Wilhelm Lane.

Registration for age 9 and younger will begin at 8 a.m. and for ages 10 to 15 at 10 a.m.

The cost is $1 per child. Prizes will be awarded.

Breakfast talk will focus on good planning

Taneytown Economic Development Commission will hold its monthly networking business breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Friday at Thunderhead Bowling Centre, 4337 Old Taneytown Road.

Mike Paone, director of the Southern Maryland regional office of the Department of Planning, will discuss good planning.

The cost for breakfast is $5.50, payable at the meeting. Reservations are required by Wednesday at 410-751-1100, ext. 20.

Taneytown Senior Center schedules show, boat trip

The Taneytown Senior Center, 220 Roberts Mill Road, has planned activities for this month.

Showtime, the BIG Show, will be held at 1 p.m. July 15, featuring line, tap and ballroom dancers and cloggers. Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m.

A trip to paddlewheel on the Choptank River will be held July 27. The cost is $65 and includes transportation and lunch.

Library branch to offer programs, ice cream party

The Taneytown library branch, 10 Grand Drive, will offer:

"Birds of Prey" at 10 a.m. Friday for all ages (children 3 and younger with an adult). A naturalist from Bear Branch will bring birds of prey for a close-up look at the winged hunters. Registration is required.

"Knock-out Nails!" at 2 p.m. July 12 for teens. Shelly Bandy of Studio 11 in Westminster will teach step-by-step skills to properly care for and paint nails. Supplies will be provided. Registration is required.

"Old-Fashioned Ice Cream Party" at 1:30 p.m. July 13 for ages 7 to 10. Stories and fun facts about how ice cream is made will be featured. Participants will make their own sweet treat. Registration is required.
