Tip of the week: Resumes for older workers

If you are a seasoned member of the work force, you may want to prepare a functional resume instead of a chronological one. Rather than focus on dates, review relevant experiences and prepare a resume that highlights the major aspects of the position sought.

Focus on your last 10 years of experience - the years most relevant to employers. Describe your competencies in a way that indicates both the depth and breadth without getting too technical.

For example, under management experience, you might say, "Provided leadership to a team of 7-10 (information technology) professionals including coaching, counseling, performance reviews and merit increase recommendations."

Be selective in the functional categories you address. Try to match the core competencies required for the position. Rather than identify your previous employer, you may want to include a generic statement such as "for a Fortune 500 company" or "for a major manufacturing plant."
