Discovery of fake bomb prompts evacuation of Bel Air businesses

The discovery of a mock explosive device prompted a three-hour evacuation of two Bel Air businesses yesterday, authorities said.

According to the state fire marshal, two employees of Bel Air Auto Auction found the device, of a type use for training purposes, in a 1999 Ford Contour scheduled to be auctioned. The employees took debris from the car outside to burn it and later placed the device on the charred remains. An auction employee spotted the device and called 911.

Two businesses in the 800 block of Bel Air Road, including Bel Air Auto Auction, were evacuated until bomb squad and fire officials examined the device and determined it was fake. The incident remains under investigation, officials said.
