THE QUESTION: HOW DO I FIND OUT IF I NEED A COUNTY BUILDING PERMIT?

Homeowners may be required to apply for a permit and present plans for ordinary repairs or construction. The county provides three ways to find out just what you need. The county's Web site (www.aacounty.org) includes a guide for what kind of improvements homeowners may need permission for. (For example, no permit is necessary for replacing carpet, but one is required for changing out a door or window that's a different size.)

The county stipulates that separate trade permits are required for mechanical, plumbing, and electrical work, and the work must be performed by tradesmen licensed in the county.

Questions can also be referred to the county's Permit Application Center at (410) 222-7700 and at InspectionsandPermits@aacounty.org
