Tip of the week: Develop coaching skills

Coaching is the ongoing, supportive process of guiding and developing employees. It is a results-oriented activity that is a shared responsibility between the coach and employee. Managers need to develop effective coaching skills to get the best performance from their employees while providing them opportunities for professional growth.

Effective coaching skills include:

Setting clear goals, objectives and priorities

Regularly observing behavior and performance

Providing immediate feedback - both positive and constructive

Recognizing good performance

Excellent interpersonal communication skills

Respect for the employee

Planning for coaching sessions

Coaching takes both planning and practice. Write it down, keep practicing and reap the rewards.
