Web site removes Steele's praise for book on GOP history

June 14, 2005|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

After criticism from the Maryland Democratic Party, supportive quotes from Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele have been removed from a Web site selling a book on the racial and civil rights history of the Republican Party.

"I decided to take it down," said Michael Zak, author of Back to Basics for the Republican Party, speaking of Steele's praise for the book.

State Democrats last week launched a petition drive to ask Steele to repudiate his support for the book. Zak, in speeches in Maryland, has said that Democrats historically have worked to subjugate African-Americans and has called the Ku Klux Klan the "terrorist" wing of the Democratic Party.

Steele said on WBAL radio last weekend that his office asked Zak to change the site because he made the comments when he was state party chairman, not lieutenant governor. Steele repeated his praise for the book, however: "It's a good book. ... It's based in history."
