Lively anti-tobacco programs given in English, Spanish

Jovenes del Barrio (Teens From the Hood), a Howard County group of five young Hispanic actors, is offering lively, free anti-tobacco presentations for young people and community groups in the county.

The 30-minute production, Stop and Live, or Pare y Viva, can be given in English or Spanish. A group discussion follows the show.

The troupe, which funded by a grant from the Howard County Health Department's Tobacco Control Program, and by FIRN, Alianza de la Comunidad and Conexiones, was founded in January.

Applicants sought for wildlife panel

The Columbia Council, which also meets as the Columbia Association board of directors, is seeking applicants for vacancies on its wildlife and habitat committee, a subcommittee of the open-space committee.

Members serve a two-year term.

NAMI support group for families is to meet

The Howard County chapter of NAMI (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill) will offer a family support group at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the day room at Harmony Hall retirement community, 6336 Cedar Lane, Columbia.

The group provides support and education to families and friends of people affected by mental illness. Those who attend need not be NAMI members.

Volunteer of the Year nomination forms available

Nomination forms for Howard County's 2005 Volunteer of the Year award are available.

Nominees must be residents of the county or do their volunteer work in the county, and their work should have a significant impact on the community or on an individual. Community groups and local businesses that deserve recognition can also be nominated.

Each nominee will be recognized by the county executive and the County Council at a Sept. 21 ceremony. A winner will be selected and will represent the county at the statewide Maryland You are Beautiful volunteer-recognition program.

Grants available to help provide family services

The Howard County Local Children's Board has announced the availability of funding for fiscal year 2006 to provide Interagency Family Preservation Services -- short-term assistance to promote the integrity of the family, build family skills and reduce out-of-home placement of children while ensuring their safety. Applications are due by June 20.
