Farmers' markets to open this month

Three farmers' markets in Carroll County are to open for the season in Westminster and Taneytown.

The Downtown Westminster Farmers' Market is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays through Nov. 26 at the Conaway South parking lot along Route 27.

The Carroll County Farmers' Market opens Saturday at the Carroll County Ag Center off Smith Avenue. Hours are from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays until Sept. 3, including the week of the 4-H and FFA Fair, when the market will be outside under a tent.

Opening day for the market will feature fresh produce in season, gourmet foods, fine arts and crafts, garden-ready material, and plants from the American Rhododendron Society.

A drawing for Father's Day gifts, a demonstration on making note cards by Leslie Hanna, and cooking with herbs by Barbara Steele from Alloway Gardens will be included.

The Health Department will offer free blood-pressure checks.

The Taneytown Main Street Farmers' Market will open from 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays June 25 through autumn at the Tender Learning Care parking lot along East Baltimore Street.

The markets offer a wide variety of locally grown agricultural products including fresh fruits and vegetables, cut flowers, herbs, potted plants, baked goods and honey.

Women, Infants and Children (WIC) and Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) checks are accepted at the three markets.

Dairy Field Days to be in Howard

The Maryland Cooperative Extension will hold its annual Dairy Field Days this summer at the Howard County Fairgrounds in West Friendship.

Show dates, deadline for registration and contact for each breed is as follows:

Ayrshire: July 23, entry by July 8 to Rick Hodiak, 410-313- 1912.

Brown Swiss: July 23, entry by July 1 to Cliff Helkenn, 301-371-6786.

Guernsey: July 9, entry by June 22 to Shirley Smith, 301-834-8539.

Jersey: July 16, entry by July 1 to Sue Groft, 301-898-8206.

Holstein: July 16, entry by July 1 to Rick Hodiak, 410-313- 1912.

Master Farmers offer 2 scholarships

The Maryland Master Farmers Association has two scholarships of $1,500 each for the 2005-2006 academic year.

The Mid-Atlantic program is co-sponsored by American Agriculturist and the Cooperative Extension organizations of the land-grant universities.

The scholarships provide financial assistance to students pursuing a degree in agriculture or a related field at the University of Maryland, College Park (including the Institute of Applied Agriculture), or UM Eastern Shore.

Brochure on buying holiday greens in county

The Christmas Trees & Holiday Greens in Carroll County, Maryland brochure is being updated through the Department of Economic Development.

Any Christmas tree grower in Carroll County wishing to advertise is asked to respond. The brochure will be available at the Visitor Center in Westminster and local libraries, as well as around the state.

It can be viewed online at www.carrollag.org.

There is no fee to be included.

The brochure includes cut-your-own farms with dates and hours of operation, directions, trees and sizes available and other offerings. A Carroll County map with the location of each farm also is provided.
