World War II living-history event planned

The Ellicott City B&O Railroad Station Museum will present "German POWs in Howard County," a two-day World War II living-history event, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 25 and noon to 5 p.m. June 26.

The weekend, which is planned in conjunction with the museum's continuing exhibit, "World War II: The Home Front," will focus on the use of German POWs in United States as part of the work force. POWs will be moving through the station as they are taken to Howard County farms to work. A contingent will clean and fix the station and military police will guard the prisoners. Military vehicles will be on display.

Admission is $5; $4 for students and senior citizens. Children to age 13 pay $3; those to age 3 will be admitted free.

The museum is at 2711 Maryland Ave., Ellicott City. The last admission is a half-hour before closing.

Bingo, lunch, bake sale scheduled at VFW post

The Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 8097, 7209 Montevideo Road, Elkridge, will hold a bingo, lunch and bake sale from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. June 26.

Lunch will be served from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.; bingo will be played from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The bake sale will remain open until it is sold out.

Navy Seaman Recruit Damian A. Martin, son of Larry A. Martin of Ellicott City, has completed Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Conversation club:

The Miller branch library, 9421 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, offers an English Conversation Club from 7:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Mondays. The club is intended for adults and teenagers who speak English as a second or third language and who want to practice in a group setting. Registration is requested. 410-313-1950.

Gardening advice:

The Miller branch library, 9421 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, is offering drop-in question-and-answer sessions with master gardeners from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Mondays and 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays to Sept. 30. Those interested are invited to discuss gardening concerns or bring plant samples. 410-313-1950.

Contest:

Registration for the second Ellicott City Idol Contest is to begin Tuesday at the Miller branch, 9421 Frederick Road. Youngsters ages 11 to 18 can try out for the grand prize of studio time at Sheffield Audio Video Productions. The finals will be held June 30. 410-313-1950.
