Performer of the Year

Brian Harvey, Centennial

A solid performer in cross country for the past four years, the senior proved he could be just as prolific on a track.

His most significant performance occurred at the county championships, where he captured the 800 in 2 minutes, 0.72 seconds, the 1,600 in 4:28.16 and the 3,200 in 9:58.49 and ran a leg of the winning 3,200-relay squad that posted a time of 8:11.04.

Harvey duplicated that effort at the Class 3A East regional meet, winning the 800 (2:01.07), 1,600 (4:30..28), the 3,200 (9:57.25) and 3,200 relay (8:10.62). He earned his first state crown by taking the 1,600 in 4:23.05.

Coach of the Year

Pete Hughes, Long Reach

Unheralded for much of the spring campaign, the Lightning announced its presence by slipping past Centennial, Howard and Glenelg for the county championship -- the school's first since 2000. Proving that it was not a fluke, Long Reach claimed the Class 3A East regional crown, too.

Hughes previously guided the Lightning girls team to county and regional indoor track titles in 1998 and has been the football coach since the school opened in 1996.
