High school senior wins Elks scholarship

Haiwen Chen, a graduating senior at Catonsville High School, has been awarded a $60,000 scholarship by the Elks National Foundation.

She was selected from among more than 11,000 applicants based on scholarship, leadership and financial need, and will receive $15,000 a year for four years.

The scholarship is one of two first-prize awards being given through the Elks' "Most Valuable Student" competition. The other winner is Roy Kimmey of Northumberland, Pa.

The Elks National Foundation will award a total of $2.2 million to 500 finalists.
